Before you buy a street-legal e-bike

What makes an e-bike street-legal?

In New York, an e-bike is a bicycle with operable pedals and a motor rated under 750 watts. Class 1 (pedal-assist) and Class 2 (throttle) cut motor assist at 20 MPH; Class 3 cuts at 25 MPH and is for NYC only. Riders must be 16 or older, and NYC caps e-bike operating speed at 15 MPH. Every bike on this page meets the 750W-and-under, real-pedals test.

Rated watts vs. peak watts — what's the difference?

Rated (nominal) wattage is the motor's continuous legal rating — that's the number the 750W law cares about. Peak wattage is the short burst the motor can hit for a few seconds on a hill. A bike rated 500W with a 1200W peak is still a legal e-bike; a bike rated 1000W is not, even if the listing only brags about the peak number.

Why do some of these show a shipping restriction for NYC?

Amazon restricts e-bike delivery to some addresses based on local laws and its own policies, and New York City has been cracking down on illegal e-moto sellers. The restriction varies by ZIP and changes over time — the two bikes that showed free Manhattan delivery at last check were the Vivi 26″ and the INVANTI. Always confirm delivery to your address at checkout.

Want more power than 750W?

Then you're shopping for a moped or motorcycle in the eyes of the law — see our fastest e-bikes on Amazon roundup. Registration, insurance, or plates may be required where you live, and bike lanes and trails may be off-limits.
