Before you buy a snow blower
Corded, cordless, or gas — which should I buy?
Corded electrics are light and cheap but tether you to an outlet. Cordless gives you freedom with 30–60 minute runtimes. Gas two-stages handle the deepest, heaviest snow and the biggest driveways — at the cost of noise and maintenance.
Single-stage vs two-stage — what's the difference?
Single-stage augers touch the ground and are great for up to about 8 inches of light snow. Two-stages add an impeller that throws heavy, deep snow much farther — the pick for lake-effect and nor'easter country.
What clearing width do I need?
18–20 inches suits sidewalks and short driveways. 22–24 inches and up earns its keep on long or wide driveways. Wider clears faster but costs more and needs more storage.
Do I need self-propelled?
On flat, small areas, no. On slopes, gravel, or 100-plus-foot driveways, self-propulsion turns a workout into a walk.
